The more things change the more things stay the same…

As the song goes, “The more things change the more things stay the same,” as far as the fishing goes on Devils Lake these days.  This past week we have had quite the variety of weather patterns thrown our way.  From flat calm to high winds to cold front to warm fronts and yet the fishing has remained excellent!    Both the numbers of walleyes and northern pike and the sizes of them has been very impressive.  We had a group from Iowa keep track of the number of walleyes they caught and released on their way to catching their limits of 15 per boat.  They sizes they kept were from 15 to 22 inches.  The one boat caught 52 and the other caught 63.  They did not keep track of the northern pike but on the walleyes alone that is over 100 fish per day for these boys!    Hard to keep these guys from running out of bait and thanks to the northern pike, running out of spinners too.

Our methods have remained the same as the last 6 reports…slow trolling bottom bouncers and spinners tipped with a half a crawler or Berkley gulp minnows.  We are still concentrating on weed line edges that the wind and waves are coming into.  The depths are anywhere from 8 to 13 feet of water.  These weed lines are not everywhere and it does take some practice staying on the edge of them but once you get the course down and plotted on the gps, life becomes a lot easier.

Well by now school has started most everywhere and now that the kids are back to work, it is the perfect time for a lot of people to sneak away on a fishing trip.  It is not too late by any means as the fishing quite honestly could not get much better.  Our schedule for September looks pretty solid but we do still have plenty of room to fit your party in on most dates.  We wouldn’t want you to miss out on one of the best seasons Mitchell’s Guide Service has ever had on Devils Lake!  We would love to have you.
