Spring Fishing is Here!

Warmer weather has arrived and the fishing is picking up! We are seeing surface temps on Devils Lake hovering around that 45-50 degree range which means shallow water is key right now. It seems like the afternoons and evenings have been best for the bite after the water temps have warmed up from the sun throughout the day.

Right now is a great time to be fishing for Pike and Walleye on Devils Lake. If you are fishing from shore, pick a shallow area next to the rip-rap shorelines or find one of our coulees that are running and try your luck at finding fish.  I was out in the boat fishing the main lake this last weekend with some success. If you are taking the boat out, try to find the back-bays that are protected and shallow. These areas always seem to warm up the quickest and provide some of the better spring fishing. Another trick is to find “stained” water this time of the year, the fish seem to be a little more lure-shy when in crystal clear water vs stained water.

As for presentations right now try using jigs tipped with plastics and also jigs with leeches.  Pink, Chartreuse and Orange jig heads have been working the best, tip these jig heads with plastic paddle tails. Try various colors of paddle tails to see what is working the best. This last week it seems that the white paddle tails have been working well. It looks like we are in for quite the warm up this weekend which should help warm the lake and make the fish even more active.Walleye-5-2-17-Web
