Jason Mitchell Outdoors and In-Fisherman

3/4/11 Devils Lake, ND

In-Fisherman recently traveled to Devils Lake to film an ice fishing segment for their nationally televised show.  In-Fisherman host Jeff Simpson teamed up with local professional angler Jason Mitchell along with Eric Naig from Northland Tackle.  The anglers combined jigging tactics with tip ups to catch several nice walleyes and northern pike with the largest pike measuring just under forty inches.  Most of the walleyes measured between sixteen and twenty two inches.  “We set up on a few spots where we caught jumbo perch, nice walleyes and big pike all in the same general area and that is pretty unique,” explained Jason Mitchell.  Snow and slush conditions have improved drastically on Devils Lake and anglers are traveling around fairly well with pickup trucks.  Ice conditions were very good and anglers traditionally experience great fishing during this late ice period that will develop over the next month. The anglers used portable Clam Fish Traps to fish a handful of locations across the lake over the course of two days with temperatures often well below zero.  “With the new fabric on the shelters and outer wear like Ice Armor, anglers can fish outside and be comfortable and because of this comfort, ice fishing continues to get more popular,” stressed Jason Mitchell.  Most of the walleyes and pike were caught in seven to twelve feet of water with the biggest walleye and pike both coming on a tip up.  Numbers of walleyes were also caught aggressively jigging Macho Minnows and Puppet Minnows tipped with a minnow head.
