Celebrate National Tourism Week!

Please join us in celebrating National Tourism Week!

The Devils Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau is excited to celebrate National Tourism Week, May 7th – May 12th. National Tourism Week is an annual salute to travel and tourism in America with a spotlight on the impact of travel.  Local events are presented in cities, states and travel businesses nationwide to highlight the power of travel. It was established as National Tourism Week when the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution in 1983 designating the week to be celebrated in May.

“Travel and tourism supports 14.4 million jobs across the nation, including many right here in the Lake Region,” tourism director Suzie Kenner said. “We are rallying this week to celebrate the benefits of travel in our community, and we’re letting our elected officials and local citizens know that a vote for travel is a vote for the Lake Region.”

In 2009, North Dakota lead the nation in all four categories measured by the United States Travel Association: travel expenditures, travel generated taxes, travel related job growth and payroll. Since then, North Dakota has seen record breaking numbers in hotel occupancy numbers, and airline passenger numbers.

To celebrate, the Lake Region is invited to participate in a new summer program, “Discover Devils Lake,” a ‘passport’ program which will be unveiled on Monday, May 7th during the Devils Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau’s open house (located at 208 Highway 2 West) from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Discounts will be offered on North Dakota, Devils Lake and Pride of Dakota merchandise, prize drawings will be held and you can take a look at the newly remodeled visitor center. The Devils Lake Chamber Ambassadors will have a ribbon cutting ceremony at 4:30 along with refreshments served. Read more about the passport program here.

Trivia will begin on 96.7 the Mix starting Monday morning and will continue throughout the week.

On Tuesday, head to the Sheriff’s House (located on 6th Street) to take in the culture of Devils Lake from year’s past. It is open to the public from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm.

On  Wednesday, May 9th, the Devils Lake CVB will conduct their second annual familiarization tour. This is free to members of the Chamber of Commerce. Get your employees to come on board and learn about the area. This will give your employees the ammunition they need to help our visitors with a fulfilling stay in Devils Lake, and make your customers RETURNING customers.  The tour runs from noon until 5:00 pm. E-mail Suzie at suzie@devilslakend.com to RSVP or to find out more information.

On Saturday, May 12, Sullys Hill National Game Preserve will host an “International Migratory Birding Day” event at 10:00 am. Join Refuge Manager Tom Ibsen and volunteers in celebrating the return of hundreds of bird species to the Lake Region. Spring is an excellent time for beginners to learn to use binoculars to explore the world of birds and other creatures. This one-hour program will provide beginners with an overview of binocular use, basic identification skills, and time to practice. Families are welcome!

Governor Jack Dalrymple stated in the North Dakota Tourism 2011 Annual Report, “Tourism is growing our economy one trip at a time, and as more people experience the legendary qualities of our state, that trend will continue. Thank you to our tourism professionals and businesses, and communities for providing great experiences for our visitors and for contributing to the growth and strength of our state.”

We look forward to celebrating travel and tourism in our community again this year and hope you will celebrate with us.
