August is Off to a Good Start!

As expected, August fishing has started off outstanding! Many presentations continue to work great including trolling with spinners and/or cranks, slip bobbers, jigging, lindy rigs, and pitching plastics into flooded timber and weed beds. The best locations are the wind-blown shorelines where the baitfish are stockpiled. Keep in mind that the wind-blown shorelines are not the only place to fish on Devils Lake, however it is a good starting point.

Our guides from Mitchells Guide Service prefer the trolling technique due to the fact you can cover more ground in less time. This gives you a better opportunity to zero in on the fish in order to work an area more aggressively.

We have some of our guides from Mitchells Guide Service fishing in 6-8 feet of water with great success, and others are fishing depths ranging from 15 to 20 feet with the same success. As you can tell there are not any particular fishing techniques or depths that are more effective than others. Some of the larger fish that have come in tend to stick really tight to the weed beds. In order to get this big fish out of the weed beds it takes a lot a patience and passes in front of these weed beds to get them to come out and strike.

There has been a lot of success on Devils Lake as of late, not only for our guides, but for the fishermen going out on their own as well. A few spots that have been doing really well include the area in Six Mile Bay between the two bridges, Concrete Bay by the Casino, the Minnewaukan Flats, and Pelican Lake to name a few. Hot colors include Perch, Yellow Perch and Shad for crankbaits. The fish do not seem as picky when it comes to spinners as people are catching them on many different colors. When fishing with spinners, Gulp!, night crawlers and leeches have all been working great.

We have all of the tackle mentioned above along with some of the hottest colors that have been working well at the Woodland Resort bait shop.

We have many great dates open towards the end of August and into September, so let one of our 11 guides take you out and experience some of the Midwest’s best walleye fishing this season with Mitchell’s Guide Service.
