Impressive fishing on Devils Lake

Posted: June 13, 2013

Devils Lake has enjoyed some sunshine as of late and the fishing has been impressive. Our guides are catching some beautiful walleyes and a tremendous number of pike. Most of the walleyes are getting caught in 3 to 8 feet of water. Casting jigs with soft plastic tails or Mimic Minnows has begun working really well on wind blown shorelines. Slip bobbers with leeches have also been working extremely well for walleyes. Finding the right water clarity and water temperature has been key. Many of the bays on the Main Lake have cleared up with good visibility down to six feet. Look for areas where the wind is staining the water and the walleyes will be nearby. Pike are getting caught everywhere. Some good areas for walleyes include Howard Farm, Hog Bay, Holy Bay, Golden Pond, Doc Hagens and Penny Bay. The Main Basins are still pretty cool (low 50′s) so play the wind and find pockets of warmer water. Good luck this weekend from Mitchell’s Guide Service

Nothing Like A Little Sunshine To Make Anglers Smile!

Posted: June 12, 2013

Sunshine!  Nothing like a little sunshine to put smiles on anglers faces!  Since Sunday morning we received another 1.3″ of rain but it looks like we will get a break for the next few days.  Warmer weather will jumpstart the back bays enticing walleyes to enjoy the shallow warm water.  Anglers have been doing well focusing on two primary locations.  1.  Area bridges.  A sure bet is working bridges on Sixmile bay at Hwy. 19 and 2, Mauvais Coulee’s Hwy. 19, and the bridge on Hwy 57 on the main lake.  Thoughts are post spawn fish are migrating and these locations provide solid ambush points.  2. back bays.  A common denominator is back bays.  These locations warm up the quickest and attract active fish.  Anglers are reporting good to fair luck in locations like Walford’s bay, New mill bay, Howard’s bay, etc.   Bridge anglers are doing well vertical jigging leeches.  Back bay anglers are doing well on slip bobering leeches or pitching cranks.  We should see some transition start from a spring pattern to a more summer pattern if we get the mid 70’s or better forecasted temps.

Good luck and enjoy the sunshine!

The Bite on Devils Lake is Good!

Posted: June 11, 2013

The bite on Devils Lake is good! We are catching walleyes, northern pike, and bass in the shallows (2-10ft). The walleyes are healthy and fat and we have had some dandy slough sharks as well! Jigs and plastics have caught the most fish; however, crank baits have also produced at times.

It is a fun time of year because you never know what you’re going to catch…There are even some whopper class bass being caught.
Some of our guides have also caught walleyes out in the deeper water (10-18 ft). They have used bouncers and spinners or vertical jigged with leeches and crawlers.
It was a long winter it’s time to enjoy some action on the open water!! Good luck to all!!

Things are heating up!

Things are heating up the water temps and the FISHING!!! I guided this week 4 trips with all the groups catching limits of pike, limits of walleye, and a few white bass. I was out on Saturday with my family and we caught our limit of 15 walleye slip-bobbering the shallow weed lines fairly quickly. I do have openings to take your group out this month. If you want to keep up with the fishing on a daily basis please friend request me on face-book and I will add you to my friend list. The weekly forecast looks good for the upcoming week and that should help the water temps too. Give us a call and book your trips as soon as you can. Tight lines <{{{{{{{> John

Good Fishing… But In Need Of Stable Weather

Posted: June 4, 2013

6-3-13

Good news:  Fishing has been good for both walleyes and pike when we can get our guests on the water.  Bad news:  Other than 2 days, the last 8 days has been brutal for weather.  High winds have made getting in the water and to key locations difficult.  We could sure use a little stable weather and some decent temps to warm up the main lake basins.  Water temps range from mid 60’s in shallow regions to mid 50’s in deeper basin waters.   We have received nearly 7” of rain in the past 10 days.

Anglers fishing back bays in shallow water have done well on good walleyes and tons of small to huge pike.  Afternoon fishing has been better when surface temps are at their highest.  Best luck has been slip bobbers with leeches or casting shallow cranks.

White bass fishing is just getting started.  Cast anything shinny or noisy!  When in doubt and jig and minnow will work.

We are now 100% ready for the summer.  All docks are in, boat and pontoon rentals are in, guides are going strong, and camp is set!  Our marine repair crew are moving into our new shop at the resort and is ready to assist you with your boat repairs.  Now all we need is some summer weather and we will be set!

It is not too late to plan a summer get away.  We do have some decent week day openings in June and July , and more options in August.  Give us a call at 701-662-5669 ext. 1 and we can go over some dates that will work for you and your crew.
