Warm Days and Good Fishing

The walleye bite on Devils Lake has been good this past week. We are just coming off hosting the Cabela’s MWC fishing tournament where the top two teams finished with impressive 2 day (10 fish) weights at 48 pounds.  That is an average of almost 5 pounds a fish….pretty dang impressive for July I must say.

Pulling spinners with bottom-bouncers has seemed to be the most effective way to put walleyes in the net this last week.  Many people are still pulling their spinners along weed edges with good success, but we are also noticing some of the deeper water structure (rocks and road ditches) in about that 20-25 feet of water range are starting to produce fish. Water temps have been hovering in that 72-74 degrees range as of late.

For those of you looking to try the spinner bite out, the best thing you can do is hook a spinner up to a 1oz, 1 ¼oz or 1 ½oz bottom bouncer depending on the depth you are fishing at. Find an area on your map or sonar that you think would be holding fish and start trolling at 1-1.4mph and cover water. If you catch a fish, mark that spot and turn back over it and keep working that area, as the old saying goes….where there is one walleye there is usually more!

Good luck to everyone hitting the water this weekend, it looks to be a nice one to be out on the lake! Don’t forget to share your pictures of your catches and time on Devils Lake on our Visit Devils Lake, North Dakota Facebook Page.
