National Tourism Week

Devils Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau will be celebration National Tourism week, which is May 7-15 this year. National Tourism Week is an important week to celebrate, and I think it is even more important to our community this year. Devils Lake has seen changes over the past few years with our lake situation and it has had many negative effects, but when it comes to tourism it is important to stay positive. People come to our regional from all over the world to experience our state, our lake, and our town. It is important to show them the best vacation possible.

This year we are sponsoring a familiarization tour around the area. We will hop on a bus with Happy Trails Bus Lines and visit the museums downtown, Sullys Hill National Game Preserve and Fort Totten Historic Site. You need to ask yourself and your employees these important questions: Did you know that the Fort Totten Historic Site is opening this season with a new visitor center? Do you know how to tell a customer how to get to the Fort Totten Historic Site? Did you know that people travel from all over to spend up to a week in Devils Lake researching their family history at the Old Post Office Museum? Do you know how Sullys Hill got its name?

The familiarization tour will answer these questions. It is important to give proper information to our guests to get them to the destinations they want to see and give them options of things to do in our area. The more they have available at the time of the questions, the better chance they have of spending more money in our area and possibly staying overnight.

You can register yourself and your employees at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FAMTOUR.

The Devils Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau is also sponsoring 25 individuals to attend “What Customers Really Want,” a half-day seminar put on by Forward Devils Lake and TrainND. The seminar will explore concepts and benefits of customer service by setting extraordinary standards for businesses, strategies to avoid burnout, how to say ‘no’ in a positive way and remain calm when the customer is upset, as well as other customer topics. To register online, go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/nationaltourismweek.

You are also invited to attend an open house in the Visitor Center, located at 208 Highway 2 West (next to Wal-Mart), on Tuesday May 10th, from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm. Stop by anytime throughout the day for coffee and snacks, check out what the Visitor Center has to offer, as well as our new interactive website, and to sign up for fantastic prize giveaways.

Tourism is a vital component to Devils Lake – let’s celebrate it!
