Fall is in the air in Devils Lake!
Fall is in the air. We have had a week of changing weather patterns this past week. We began the week with another major cold front with a lot of wind and much cooler temperatures. We had such fierce winds the early part of the week that we had to cancel all of our guide trips. From Wednesday on however, the weather straightened out and we were back to fishing.
The walleye fishing and the northern pike fishing was excellent! The size of walleyes have been in that 16 to 21 inch range with an occasional 23 to 24 incher. We had one fellow release a 27 inch fish. The northerns are mostly 4 to 6 pounds with a few larger ones but they are that perfect size for eating.
We have had a lot of groups that we have hosted fish fries for on their third and final day of their fishing trips and it has been a “big” hit and fun way to wrap up the fishing trip. Woodland Resort purchased a commercial grade deep fryer that does an excellent job kicking out some of the finest tasting fish you will ever eat. Throw in some warmed up baked beans and potato chips or cottage fries and its good eatin in the neighborhood. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity either let us know when you check in or tell your fishing guide and we will make it happen.
Our methods again have not changed much. On certain parts of the lake we are trolling crank baits with either fireline or lead chore. Both the Salmo Hornets and jointed shad raps are still the most effective. On other parts of the lake we have some of our guides still doing real well bottom bouncing with spinners along weed beds.
September is here and we still have some dynamite fishing ahead of us. Last year the month of September was one to remember and it is good to see a lot of our customers have. Looking through the schedule book it looks like we have a lot of repeat guests from last September. We had excellent fishing last September and this year should be no different. We would like to send out a special invite to all you Iowa farmers out there waiting for harvest.
Good Luck Fishing Everybody!
