Devils Lake 5/31/2013 Fishing Report
While the weather just doesn’t seem to want to cooperate whatsoever, anglers who’ve been going out are reporting improved and excellent fishing. Shorefisherman are reporting the Mauvee Coulee and Channel A continue to produce nice catches of both pike and walleyes and anglers are also starting to see the white bass showing up. These anglers are also reporting some great fishing around the moving water bridges and the rip rap along the highways. Early morning, mid day when the water’s warmest, and dusk have been the best periods. For walleyes, anglers are using jigs with minnow or leeches, jigs with twister tails, mimic minnows, and cranks such as shad raps, countdowns, flicker shads, and hornets. Pike are also being caught with these presentations or with herring or smelt. For white bass, jigs with minnows, chartruese twister tails, or cranks in firetiger or blue have been working well and are year in and year out goto presentations. For boaters, most anglers have been hitting the far west warmer waters of the Flats and Six Mile Bay. However, Bill Woods of East Bay Campground (www.eastbaycampground.com) says anglers in that part of the lake are starting to have some excellent fishing as well. The shallower bays are warming up and the moving water bridge areas are firing up. At the bridges he indicates anglers are jigging with leeches and minnows from 15-25 feet for some nice walleyes and pike. In the shallows anglers are cranking shad raps, countdowns, and hornets. Blue/silver, perch , firetiger, and silver/black all have been working well. Bill also said the south end of Black Tiger has really turned on for monster white bass. This weekend is the annual Devils Run car show. So, after you catch that limit of fish, be sure to stop in town and check out the hundreds of classic cars that come to this great annual event each year! Good Luck and Good Fishing from everyone at the Devils Lake Tourism and Chamber offices.
