28th annual ice fishing tournament right on schedule
Fire Chief Jim Moe said he has heard rumors that the annual ice fishing tournament has been cancelled and has fielded numerous phone calls from concerned ticket holders — and he tells them all the same thing: The tournament will go on as planned.
“We’re right on schedule,” he said. “There’s 13 inches of ice, we have no reason to cancel at this point.”
He said the colder temperatures moving into the region have helped their case considerably, but they are still monitoring the ice closely.
“We will cancel if safety is a concern, but I really don’t see that happening,” he said.
The tournament has been held the last Saturday in January for the past 27 years, with the 28th annual landing on Jan. 28, 2012.
The tournament draws participants from area states and Canada and often sells out months before the tournament. The ticket sales were limited to 15,000 this year.
