Fun Times!

Posted: June 25, 2015

The bite has been very good!

Best depths are 4-15 ft for walleyes.

Areas that have new weed growth are key. We are trolling cranks, bobbering, pitching jig plastic combos, or pulling spinners. Crawlers have been the ticket for live bait! We are seeing more and more algae bloom, which will help to dirty up bays and produce fish.

Pike are still good in the shallows. Pitching or trolling shorelines is the most productive for them. Bass have been a bit spotty, but once you locate them, it’s on!!

All in all life is good in Devils Lake these days!

Good Luck!!

Things Have Heated Up!

Posted: June 18, 2015

The fishing has definitely picked up in Devils Lake. Water temps are hovering in the mid-60s right now and the fishing is good. There are reports of a lot of people getting into the eater size walleyes.

The bobber bite is still going strong right now. Focus on windblown weed bed edges in 6-10 feet of water.  Plain hooks or 1/16th ounce jig heads tipped with leeches have been working well and producing fish.  It seems like once you find the “x” spot you are in for a treat watching your bobbers take a dive under the surface.

Jigs and plastics are still producing a good number of fish as well. With the water temps warming up, the trolling bite is picking up right with it. Try focusing on the same weed beds that you would with slips bobbers and pull spinners and bottom bouncers tipped with worms or even with artificials like Berkley Gulp!

Good luck to everyone fishing this weekend! Feel free to share your catches with us on our Visit, Devils Lake Facebook page!

June 18th Report!

It’s 1:40 am and I woke up from a dream of catching Walleyes and Pike and never wrote about it!!!! Well… here it goes. The fishing this past week has been incredible. All of the presentations have been working from slip-bobbering next to the newly emerging weeds, pitching crankbaits in shallow water and pulling spinners along weed edges and on top of the underwater roads at .07-1.2 mph has yielded some real nice 16-22″ Walleye.

Pike and Whitebass are also being caught using the same presentation. I did have the honor of taking a 91 year young WWII veteran out with his family for a 1/2 day trip in cold and windy conditions!!!!! June is booked solid and July is looking 1/2 full. With the stable weather the fishing should just continue to get better and better. The lake has alot of stumps, roads barely under the surface, concrete pilons that can sure raise hell with the boat and motor. I don’t mean to scare you but, if you are planning a trip my advise is to hire a guide who knows the lake to show you around and put you on fish then, finish off your vacation or getaway having the knowledge of how to navigate the lake and the presentations to put FISH IN THE BOX!!!!!!!!!!!.

Give us a call to reserve your trip of a lifetime, fishing one of the best Walleye lakes in the nation. Till Next Time…Tight Lines John

Now is the Time to Get to Devils Lake!

Posted: June 11, 2015

Now is the time to get to Devils Lake. Fishing is not the best I have ever seen, but it is pretty darn close. We finally got some nice stable weather. Water temps are in the mid-60s. The fish are biting.

Nearly all the fishing activity is happening away from the main lake. Back bays that are shallower and warmer are holding most of the fish. Look for a bit of color in the water and play the wind if there is any. The fun part right now is that all the different species are mixed together quite often.

The walleye fishing is solid. Many techniques are working. Casting #5 Flicker Shad and Shad Raps or #7 Shallow Shad Raps is producing well most days. Perch Colors and Whites are the best, but experiment. If the fish do not seem to want to chase, try a jig and soft plastic. My go to is the 3.5 inch Ripple Shad. Hot Perch, Pink Shine and Pearl have been my best colors. Rig it on a ¼ oz jig and fish it near the bottom. Look for areas with emerging green vegetation. The cat tails are finally greening up and that is where most of the fish are.

If casting and reeling is not your game, then try slip-bobbers near the same weed edges. Anchor the boat outside the weeds and let them drift to the edge. Water depths vary from3 to 7 feet of water.

The spinner bite is just starting. I have not personally tried it yet, but it is not hard to see the success folks are having with the technique. Same areas, just move out from the weeks 40 to 100 yds.

If you want hot pike action, it seems the same areas are producing but look for a bit cleaner water. Pike are sight feeders and do not mind the gin clear stuff. Up size your lures to keep the smaller pike away. Large bass style jerk baits have produced some nice pike for us this week.

I finally ran into some nice white bass too. Small cranks and jigs worked well. Windy shorelines are what you need to concentrate these battlers.

Areas of the lake that have been good for me the past several day include East Devils Lake near the natural outlet, Jerusalem Coulee, Dead Cow Bay, Black Tiger Bay, New Mill Bay, Howard’s Farm, Doc Hagen’s, The Pepsi Barn in 6 Mile, and Golden Pond. I am sure there are others that are producing too.

Shallow water is here!!

Posted: June 10, 2015

The bite has been so much fun this past week!! We are catching fish in 1-5 pitching jig plastic combos and cranks. Also, slip bobbers with leeches have produced. The key is to find stained water, if it’s clear water you won’t get the results you want unless you have wind.

Live bait rigs have also produced some beautiful fish, work the 4-12 ft depths.

Pike fishing is insane in places and the white bass have been smacking on the rocks.

Bottom line, fish shallow, stained water and get ready!!

Water Temps Are Heating Up!

Posted:

Water temps are heating up in the lower to mid 60’s and so is the fishing!!!!! This has been a long time coming and finally the fish have been cooperating. Fishing newly emerging cattails with bobbers, pitching cranks have proven to be the best way to get them. My plan to start playing with will be pulling spinners tipped with crawlers and leeches should put a limit in the boat now.

This weekend is the casino tournament with a 1st place check of $10,000.00. I don’t fish it because I have more fun guiding clients. The phone rings for reservations 5 to 6 times each day with people looking for trips so check your calanders and give us a call and we will do our best to get you in on the action of some of the best walleye fishing on Devils Lake.

On a personnal note… I got a call from lake-link (a outdoor site) for a Pro Staff invitation( which I have excepted with honor) to become 1 of 3 to guides in North Dakota to write reports, show articles, do video for its members. So, if you haven’t been on the site I strongly encourage you to check it out. Till Next Time… Tight Lines John

June 1st Report!

Posted: June 1, 2015

Last week was like a roller coaster… water temps, wind and fishing. The 32 degree nites gave us a chill on the lake and the wind at 25+ mph last week made us cancel a couple trips. The fishing was the same, before the wind and cold temps fishing was spectacular and fairly easy. (when we found them)!! now on to later this last week.. Find the bays and find warmer water and find fish simple, right? NOT!!! A finicky bite was there and patience, patience, patience was the key to catching fish. Shallow water, less than 6′ yielded us some nice fish 14-22″.
The forecast this week calls for temps in the 70’s with a chance of rain till Friday. The phone has been ringing and June is 3/4 full and July is 1/3 full. Warmer temps and stable weather will bring great opportunities to catch fish soooo make that call and book a trip with us and enjoy a fun filled day or two catching Devils Lake walleyes. Just a reminder.. This report is weekly, if you want a daily report, Facebook friend me and see the info that day!!!
Until Next Time… Tight Lines John
