March 13th

Hello from the fast deteriorating shorelines of Devils Lake!!!! Just to let everyone know that the 2014-2015 ice season has come to a sudden end with warm temps and wind making travel unsafe for us. I want to say THANKS to ALL of my Clients for a great season!!!! This winter has had it’s ups and downs with the fishing.

Perch fishing gave most of us challenges not only catching but finding them was hard. Days they could be found then the next day gone. Moving alot was the key to catching a few but the food source (freshwater shrimp) were in abundance and it was my conclusion why perchin was tough. Another factor was the large schools just never bunched together making it difficult to stay on top of them. Walleye fishing in the mornings and evenings was good, with evenings being better for my clients. Pike fishing was awesome with the average 3-5 # and several over 8# and even some over 10 being caught!!!

I am taking summer reservations now and preparing for yet another awesome open water season!!!! My summer calander has openings… so, NOW is the time to set up your summer trip on the lake with us. If you have any questions or just want to talk about fishing… don’t hesitate to call me at 701-381-2599. I would love to hear from you!!!!! Until next time…. Tight Lines John

Updated on Ice Conditions

Posted: March 11, 2015

The warm weather has sure changed the conditions up here in Devils Lake. We are currently sitting with abnormally warm temperatures for this time of the year. The next 5 days look like they are going to be really nice, but that will not sit good for ice conditions. All of the snow on the lake has melted up here making for some very slushy conditions on the lake with lots of standing water. The forecast also calls for the wind to pick up over the weekend which can really cause some drastic changes in the ice conditions.

It looks like today and tomorrow are going to be the very last few days of vehicle traffic on the lake. If you are venturing up here over the weekend it would be a good idea to bring a 4 wheeler and planking as access onto the lake can get tough as the ice starts to pull away from the shoreline. Make sure to call ahead to our local bait shops (Ed’s 701-662-8321 and Pete’s 701-662-8033) or to the Chamber Office (1-800-233-8048) to find out the latest conditions as things can change very quickly. Be safe out there and good luck to everyone!

March Madness!

Posted: March 5, 2015

We have had some very good days of late!! The perch seem to be much more aggressive once we find them! The key is finding them…as mentioned in previous reports, cover new water. Seems like most people are fishing the same areas over and over. We have had our best luck fishing fresh fish in places we don’t usually fish. The trickiest factor in catching perch is you must find the “spot on the spot”, meaning drill lots of holes! There are days we catch limits out of a ten foot area.

Weather is looking great! This is our favorite time of year. Fishing outside, sunny/long days, makes for a lot of fun. It’s also a lot easier to drill holes when it is nicer out.

As weather gets nicer, remember to use caution and be careful as a lot can change with ice quality quickly.

Good luck!!

Warmer Days Are on the Way!

Posted:

The long awaited late ice season is not too far off in the future. Late season ice fishing can be some of the best ice fishing of the season here in Devils Lake. Some much needed stable and warmer weather looks like it is on its way.

The perch are still being caught on Devils Lake right now. Anglers are finding these perch in all parts of the lake. There really hasn’t been one particular spot that has been the “go to” spot so don’t be afraid to try areas as shallow as 7-8ft or as deep as 40-45ft. Most fish are being caught on tungsten jigs or small buckshot jigs. Tip these jigs with a minnow head or load them up wax worms. Being mobile has still been very crucial to the success of finding these perch.

Walleyes and pike are still being found in the common areas. Try fishing transition areas where the fish are moving during feeding times and also try areas with submerged structure like rock piles, roads, and trees.  The evening walleye bite has seemed to have been a little more active and better than the morning bite.

Access on the lake is still very good. 2wd pickups could be more of a challenge but you should be able to get most anywhere with a 4wd pickup. There are some small drifts with the recent winds that we have had. Make sure to bring your extensions as our ice is over 40 inches in most spots on the lake.

Good luck to everyone this weekend!
