The Fishing is Improving!

January 29th Devils Lake Report

The fishing the past week has been good in Devils Lake. There has been some very nice weather that has allowed many people to focus on running around the ice trying to find the perch, and it looks like many people have been successful at doing so.

It seems that the days when the sun is shinning the perch are on the prowl for food and are more apt to take your bait and lure. Cloudy days you have to really work your lure to get some commotion going and cause a little frenzy to trigger the perch. It also seems that if you mark just one perch on your sonar/flasher they are pretty lazy and won’t come up off the bottom but once you mark a couple it creates a little competition between the fish and they really start to get fired up.

The walleye and pike fishing has been excellent too. Some stable weather really picked the walleye bite up, if you are looking for walleye the best times are usually the first couple of hours at first light and the last hour or two before sun down; Target areas with structure and transitional points. Pike fishing has been awesome and there have been a lot of reports of people getting into some good pike with running tip-ups.

Some general areas to key in on have been Six Mile Bay, Doc Hagen’s, Ziebach’s Pass, and Swanson’s Point. Some hot lures have been the Buckshots and Tungsten lures. Color has been pretty variable but minnow heads and wax worms have been producing a lot of fish.

As far as ice conditions go, we are sitting we just around 30 inches of ice on the lake. It won’t be long before people will need to start using extensions on their augers. There are still a few pressure ridges around but are easily avoidable by going the extra mile and taking the long way around them and not trying to cross them. Snow has been minimal up here so access on and around the lake as been excellent. Good luck to everyone fishing this weekend and especially to everyone fishing the Volunteer Fire Department Ice Fishing Tournament on Saturday!

Find the Flurry!

Posted: January 22, 2015

The bite has been hit and miss. Seems like there are days that they will go and there are days they just look at your lure. Somewhat tricky to predict what causes aggressive fish one day and negative fish the next.

We are constantly looking for the next flurry…Whether it be perch, walleye, or pike, our augers are getting quite the workouts.

Bites seem to vary a quite a bit as well. We have caught fish as shallow as 6 and as deep as 40. Seems like the walleye action is best in the 8-24 ft range  in the morning and afternoon and the perch action is best in 14-36 ft.

As far as lures go…buckshots, halis, tungsten jigs, forage minnows, and dropper rigs have all produced. More importantly than the lure is location, so cover water and find that active school!

Weather has been very pleasant! It is nice  to be able to fish outside in January and hole hop if you want!

Good luck to all!!

Fish Are Cooperating!!

Posted: January 15, 2015

We have had some excellent perch, pike, and walleye bites this past week!

Seems like we are constantly moving and working depths from 6-50 ft, but we are putting smiles on our clients faces!
Weather is finally warming up which is so needed! We will continue to search all the holes we can think of and even try a few random places here and there cause you never know where the next bite will produce….
What we know…perch bites are up and down but if you are willing to move and work a bit, positive results are happening. Walleyes are best early and from 3pm to dark. Seems like areas are changing constantly, one night hot and the next just so so.
Pike are all over and water clarity is great. Sight fishing, tip ups, and spearing had been full of excitement!
Clients are really liking our new lodge The Fish Rehab!! Check it out at www.brysguideservice.com
There are videos and pictures, it is beautiful!

The Fishing is Picking up!

Posted: January 14, 2015

It looks like fishing could heat this weekend with some warm weather in store for us! We have had some extremely variable weather the last few weeks but things are starting to look more stable now. Local bait shops have been hearing a lot of recent reports of some fish starting to be caught and the buzz for ice fishing is picking up.

It looks like a nice warm up this week and into the weekend could be what just Mother Nature ordered to spark the bite here in Devils Lake. Fish are being caught but need a little extra coaxing into biting. Word around the local bait shops like Pete’s Bait Shop and Ed’s Bait Shop is that Swanson’s Point, Rocky Point, Doc Hagens, Ziebach Pass, Military Point, the North end of Six Mile Bay, and the West End of Stump Lake have been producing fish. The Northland Buckshot Minnow has been one of the hot lures. Tipping these with a minnow head, wax worm, and perch eyes has been the ticket! One tactic that has been proving to get the fish to react and bite has been bringing up the lure a good 3 feet off the bottom to trigger the fish.

There are a few pressure ridges around the lake this year and most of the recent snow has blown off the lake making travel very easy on the lake right now. Use caution when traveling near pressure ridges as the ice is not always safe in these areas. One nice thing about Devils Lake being a large body of water is that there are always ways to get around these pressure ridges. Many people love to target the “Towers” area of the lake in the winter and the pressure ridges across Wolfords Bay and Creel Bay have made it tougher to get there. A lot of people have resorted to driving over to Grahams Island State Park and accessing the lake from there boat ramp and getting to the “Towers” that way. A couple of the major ridges to watch out for include the one across Creel Bay and Main Bay, the one across Wolfords Bay, Six Mile Bay and up in Pelican Lake.

All of the local access points from the boat ramps have been cleared off and most of the lake is sitting with 24” of ice on it Anglers are now using vehicles to access the lake and move around on it. The access points that we clear off are Six Mile Bay Boat Ramp, Henegar Boat Ramp, the end of County Road 1, Lakewood Boat Ramp, Eastbay Boat Ramp, and the access point off of 82ave (behind Pops Bar).

Good luck to everyone this weekend and enjoy this warm up that is coming!

It has been a very challenging last 10 days.  Quite Honestly the weather has been kicking our butts.  The past seven days we have had 2 blizzards, we have had temperatures as low as 53 below zero with the wind chills and the we have had days where the wind blew up to 50 miles per hour.  Do we need to even talk about what this does to the perch and walleye bite on Devils Lake?

We have had a few bright spots however, in-between fronts.  We have had some groups have some pretty good days on perch and other groups have done fairly well on walleyes.  By no means, did we have everybody limiting out but we did have a group or two that were definately in the right spot on certain days.

We are still using the small Northland Buckshot Rattle spoon tipped with minnow heads, perch eyes, or wax worms.  On the tougher days we have downsized quite a bit switching between small tungston jigs, rat finkies, hali’s, and slender spoons.  Some of the keys to success has been jigging the fish in and raising the baits up higher to reqruit more fish in.  It seems if you just mark a single fish, they never want to bite but by raising the bait and attracting two or three others into the mix, that’s what will trigger one of them to to bite.  It takes a lot of patience and we are encouraging our guests that the time to fish the hardest is when they are not marking any on the Vexilar.  If you lay the rods on the ice, you definately won’t need them.

On the bright side of things, the forecast looks awesome!  By midweek the weatherman is talking 30 degrees!  That will be a very welcomed change!  Fishing should improve as well.

Sorry no pictures this report, I am having an issue with my computer.  Good luck fishing everybody!

January 8th Report!

Posted: January 8, 2015

Fishing on Devils Lake has been a bit tougher than last year but we at Bry’s Guide Service have been working hard looking for new bites. The last week we have been targeting Walleyes in the mornings and evenings and Perch in the middle of the day; often times getting limits of “eater” sized Walleyes. Perch have been more plentiful on sunny days but still gettin em’ on overcast days. Both Walleyes and Perch have been a bit “finicky” and require more coaxing. We’ve been fishing 4-40 FOW for both Perch and Walleyes with the shallower water having a more aggressive bite.

Happy New Year to You All!!!!!!!

January 4, 2015

Lets cut right to the chase…. The fishing out here is pretty decent for Walleye and Pike however, the Perch fishing on the Main Lake has been somewhat of a challenge. We have had to go smaller lakes in the area to catch perch with a few walleyes mixed in. In the past we caught limits of Perch fairly easy and even though the we are catching 15-20 perch per day in each house the size is all over the tape measure 5″-14″ is the size range with average being 9-11″. With that being the way it is until the schools of perch can be found this has been the norm. On the Walleye side clients are catching limits of Walleyes from 14-26″ size. Mornings and evenings have been the best. Buckshot rattle spoons tipped with full minnow hooked thru the back dorsal and just letting them swim or a minnow head has been the best. The new RJ Ice Hunter spoons also have caught their fair share of fish too!!! Pike have been found all over the lake and people have been bringing in some dandy’s. My schedule is looking great with only 7 days left for January, about 10 days in February, and only 1/2 full for March. The season is in full swing now with 20″ of ice on the main lake and cold weather here for all of this week we will have plenty of ice to drive on the main lake. Be careful of pressure ridges… Yesterday a truck went nose first thru the ice by a pressure ridge and everyone was safe but the truck was full of water and I am sure that it is totaled!!! Be Safe out there. If you want to take a trip with us…. Give us a call and we will try to fit your group into our schedule. Till Next Time… Tight Lines… John
