Lake Update

Posted: April 25, 2014

Just a quick update on the lake conditions. The shorelines are starting to go and the ice has turned to a black color which means it may be a couple weeks yet. The river has been running down south and people are catching fish pre spawn using a jig head and a twister tail. Channel A is open and people are catching fish there too! I never have fished this way…..I like to let the fish spawn and not bother them during this time. I feel this is how to keep a fishery healthy and fun for years to come. I have been getting calls for summer and booking trips daily so, if you are wanting a certain date give us a call so we can take your party out and try to catch a few fish!!!! Till Next Time…Tight Lines. John

Devils Lake Fishing Report for April 17th, 2014

Posted: April 17, 2014

Well it’s finally about that time to put away the ice fishing rods and break out the long ones.  Ice conditions have deteriorated and we don’t advise people wandering out on the ice at this point.  Shorelines are melting and moving water bridge areas and coulees are starting to open.  Without a heavy snow pack as in some years, it’s hard to judge at this point what kind of a spring pike and walleye run we’ll have in the area.  And with our late spring and ice just starting to melt we don’t have a lot of fishing reports yet.  However, a few anglers have been going out and are reporting some pike running in the coulees in the Garske and north of Lake Alice areas.  Anglers are also reporting some nice walleyes being caught at the Channel A and Churches Ferry bridges in the open water at dusk.  With warmer temps expected this weekend, we expect more anglers to venture out and available fishing areas to expand.  For you anglers visiting the area and wanting to give our early spring fishing a try some of the areas to try are the coulees in the Garske area, the Mauvee Coulee between Pelican Lake and Lake Irvin, and the coulees to the north of Lake Alice.  Jigs with plastic such as Powerbait or twister tails in chartreuse, white, bright blue, or minnow type colors with or without a minnow are the go to presentation for most anglers this time of year for both pike and walleyes.  Also for pike, smelt or herring fished with a bobber or on the bottom works well most all times of the year.  Keep in mind it’s against the law to snag fish in North Dakota.  A snagged  fish is defined as a fish caught behind the gill plate.  Good Luck and we hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Easter Weekend!

Gearing Up For Summer!

Posted: April 10, 2014

All good things must come to an end!!!! What I mean by this is My ice fishing is officially done for this season. Now time to get busy gearing up for the summer. I have been working with a couple of sponsors and making headway. Those who are on-board with us so far is 13 fishing.. These rods are awesome and each are built for specific presentations, eg. Pitching, Jigging, Bobbering, Bottom-Bouncing. With that said these will all be available for my clients to use. NW Metro Tackle will be providing the jigs for us…I used their jigs this winter and needless to say they are AWESOME and caught alot of fish. Another product to the line will be WING-IT these are the bottom bouncers that we use and just like last year they are a quick change system and they too are top notch. I am also negotiating with other companies to stay up to date with my products so that I can offer the “best” for my clients this season. As we get closer to open water I will be keeping you all in the loop by updating these reports. Till Next Time… Tight Lines John

Perch Patrol Fishing Report!

Posted: April 4, 2014

Another very good week of fishing was enjoyed only to be ended by the worst storm we had all winter. We wound up with 10 inches of snow on Monday mixed with 50 mph winds. All of our guests that were scheduled to fish that day left the night before as the forecast looked very ugly. So our guide season is now complete. There is still plenty of ice and there probably will be for a while for those of you that want to still come and fish Devils Lake on your own.

This was by far one of the best ice fishing seasons in the long history of the Perch Patrol Guide Service. I think we proved that the perch numbers are back on the high side again. For both size and numbers Devils Lake is in its own league when it comes to jumbo perch. Our future looks very bright for many years to come.

We would like to Thank all of our guests that came to fish with us this winter. We know some of the great distances many of you travel to get hear. We appreciate that! That is why our guides work so hard to help you experience the best fishing we can while you are here. We can never please everyone but honestly the number of guests that left with a smile on their face has never been higher! We definitely look forward to seeing you back again next season.

This is the final fishing report for the 2013-14 season. If you would like to follow the fishing reports through out the open water season we would like to invite you to check out Mitchell’s Guide Service. This is the open water guide service that operates out of Woodland Resort. Many of the Perch Patrol Guides work for Mitchell’s Guide Service all summer long. You can either visit the website www.fishdevilslake.net or give them a “like” on Facebook. Their facebook page is simply Mitchell’s Guide Service.

Thanks Again Everybody!!! See you next year!

Fantastic Winter!

Posted: April 2, 2014

This winter has for the most part has nothing short of FANTASTIC!!!! I think we had just a handful of days where my clients never got over 12 perch each. I am still available to take you out for a late ice trip, fishing this good is not going to last forever and neither will the ice. We still have 40+ inches of ice and can still drive anywhere we want on this vast 200,000 acre pond. We did have a blizzard on Sunday and Monday and it dropped 9″ of snow and the 35 mph wind left behind a few drifts but, I was out today and travel was still good. I have been taking reservations for the summer and the way our winter bite has been this summer should be one of the best years in history. If you are thinking about a summer trip NOW is the time to RESERVE your DATES with Big Johns Guide Service. My rates will stay the same for the summer ($375.00 for 2 ppl)but will increase this winter by $25.00 ( $275.00 for 2 ppl) ice fishing. Till Next Time… Tight Lines! John

Final Ice Fishing Report

Posted: April 1, 2014

March 31 2014 fishing report
This will be the last ice fishing report of the season. Well as I write this report it looks like ice fishing could go on forever but I’m sure the sun will be out soon. I would say this was an amazing season with so many fish being caught all the pictures start to look the same. But it was a lot of fun and we met a lot of great people. I was out this weekend and there is still some time to get out and do some fishing. Walleye were very active and were being caught on live targets. Moving towards summer, cabin rentals are very busy with a lot of June and July filling up fast. There is still some room but I don’t think it will last long so if you are planning a trip for the summer get plans in order. Also we only have 5 RV spots left so if you or somebody you know would like a spot I would jump on them. We are looking forward to another awesome summer at Haybale Heights.
