Early morning bite and the right before dark bite hot!

Posted: December 27, 2012

Happy Holidays Everybody!!!  Sorry for the delayed report.  Things have been CRAZY BUSY around here.  The past 10 days the perch fishing has been very good.  Today, however, not so good.  This 20 below zero cold front we enjoyed over Christmas did not do us any favors today.  A severe case of “Lock-Jaw” seems to have developed at least for today anyway.  On the bright side of things, our day was salvaged by limits of walleyes caught by our guests before dark.  There was also a fair number of northern pike caught as well.

We are still catching our perch in fairly deep water using buckshot rattle spoons tipped with minnow heads and #8 Genz worms tipped with maggots.  The walleyes we caught today were in anywhere from 14 feet to 22 feet of water.  The early morning bite and the right before dark bite was the two hottest times that produced the most fish today.

The ice conditions on Devils Lake are improving big time!  We are finding 14 to 15 inches pretty much every where now.  Today was the first day we drove our trucks.  It sure felt good to park those ATV’s in the garage!  If you are venturing on your own, please use caution around cracks and pressure ridges.

All of our guides are in full swing.  We are hitting many areas of the lake at once, so our list of “hot spots” will continue to grow on a daily basis.  The schedule is jammed packed with guests and we are going to be very busy for the unforeseeable future.  We do still have some openings available in the next two weeks but they are getting more challenging to find.  It is a long season though and we still have plenty of room in February and March.

Have a great week Everybody and have a safe and Happy New Years as well.

Weather needs to level out/stabilize

Posted:

Good news:  After this major cold snap we now have 15-16″ of excellent ice and anglers are driving full size trucks on Creel Bay.  Main lake is questionable yet but should be good to go soon.  We have some snow, but not enough to keep you from going anywhere.  Walleyes have been biting.  Not huge numbers, but decent fish.
Bad news:  With this cold snap fishing in general has slowed down.  Tough to swallow after 10 days of crazy perch fishing.  We are pounding the ice with our crews looking for fish that will cooperate.  Marking tons of fish, but making them bite has not been easy.  Houses are getting some fish, but not large numbers.  Perch that we are getting are really nice fish.
Need the weather to level out and stabilize and the fishing should be back on track.  Good luck!!
Kyle

Started with a bang!

Posted: December 26, 2012

The season sure has started out with a bang. We found a nice school of perch in 40 foot of water and what fun it was. Walleye action is good over all a little hit and miss. Ice conditions are great, 14 to 20 inches and counting. We maybe have 4 inches of snow on the lake so travel is good. We have a few openings left in March if anyone is interested.
Keep your lines tight.

NOW is the time!

Posted: December 23, 2012

We have had some great days on the ice for both perch and walleye! Some of the perch we have caught have been so fat and big they look as though they came from a different planet. Best depths for perch have been 25-45 feet of water and most of our best walleye fishing has been in shallower water in the 10-16 feet of water.
Best lures have been lindy flyers and buckshots tipped with a minnow head. Wax worms have also caught there fair share of fish. We have also had some good action with a plain hook and full minnow.
We have caught a fair amount of pike while fishing for walleyes in the morning or afternoons.
Fishing should continue to stay good and we are currently building ice with this cold weather. NOW is the time to book that trip to Devils Lake! Remember to use caution around cracks, ridges, and current areas,

Good luck to all and everyone have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

School of fish moved south in front of…

Posted: December 21, 2012

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.!!! Which in our case is a really good thing. Making lots of ice, some people are driving most still ATV’s. By next weekend it should be safe to drive pretty much anywhere. Just use common sense. Fishing wise perch…creel bay picked up again..the school of fish moved south out in front of the Country Club. Good numbers the last couple days. Heard some rumors of Black Tiger and East Devils Lake..just haven’t had the time to go check those two spots out. Walleye fishing has been really good, Lake irvine has been on fire, Mission bay on the tracks and gravel pits has been really well. Doc hagens, The gap, golden highway, Stromme addition, Knutsons bay. Basically find structure you will find walleyes. Minnow heads so far seem to be working the best for Walleye and Perch. Buckshots, forge minnows, lindy rattlin spoons, genz worms, halis are the hooks of choice. Stay warm have fun and good luck! Be safe

8 to 14 inches of ice!

Posted: December 18, 2012

Well we had our first group of the 2012/13 ice fishing season. We had a great mix bag of fish. Walleye on structure jigging Lindy Rattle’n flyers tipped with minnow heads. Perch fishing has started out good with most fish 25 to 30 foot of water on the mud flats.  Our ice is doing well we have 8 to 14 inches of ice on most of the lake. If you venture out by yourself check with local bait shops for hazard areas. We still have a few openings in March if anyone is interested.  Keep you lines tight.

Hot Spots

Posted: December 17, 2012

I was waiting for the weekend to be over before I did any reports. Lots of people were in town fishing this weekend and I heard some really good reports and some not so good ones.

North end of Creel Bay perch fishing was excellent friday and saturday. Sunday was still ok but not as good as the first two days. Jerusalem bay in East Devils Lake i heard was pretty good as well. Still catching fish on Military Point, mix of walleyes and perch. Mission Bay has still been good for walleyes, Stromme addition mix of Walleye and Perch. Spots i have not heard reports from yet that should be good are Doc Hagens area, South end of Black Tiger, Golden Highway, Patience Point.

When people start driving pickups out on the ice more reports will come in. We are looking at 9-11 inches of ice right now with cold temps ahead. I dont feel safe driving yet but i’m sure by the weekend there will be people with pickups on the ice. Still advise 4 Wheeler traffic for at least another 7-10 days. Good luck!

Hammer Time!!!

Posted: December 16, 2012

Well, this season is starting out like last year ended.  GANGBUSTERS!  The Jumbo Perch-a-thon has been red hot on Devils Lake this past week.  A very large school of perch was found in 42 feet of water and the Perch Patrol customers cashed in Big time!  Limits of perch have been caught the past 3 days and these are the kind of perch that stop you from reeling for a moment or two.  The walleye fishing has been also very good as well with limits coming in from just about everywhere on the lake.  We can’t imagine a better start to this ice fishing season.

Northland Buckshot rattle spoons, Forage minnows, Genz worms, Hali’s with the dropper chain, Stop Light spoons, tipped with minnow heads or loaded up with wax worms have all been successful.  Plain hook and minnow below a bobber has been effective as well.

The ice conditions are improving all the time.  We have barely any snow on the ice, so without any insulation going on we are making ice quite rapidly.  For the most part the lake has anywhere from 8 to 12 inches of ice but there still could be areas where the ice is thinner.  We strongly recommend 4 wheelers, ATV’s and snowmobile for now.  Not enough ice for vehicles quite yet.

We are going to have a very busy season this year.  We have never had so many reservations in the books and as many “sold out” days on the schedule as we do right now this early in the season.  If you are at all serious about making a trip to Devils Lake this winter and fishing with the Perch Patrol, we cannot stress enough how important it is for you to get something scheduled very soon.  We want to take you fishing this season and as always once we are full…we are full.  There are still some of our regular every year customers that we have not yet heard from yet.  The word is definitely out on what an awesome season we had last year.

Have a Great Week Everybody!!!  BE SAFE!!!
