Sno Bear Fishing

Posted: December 31, 2011

Wow I forgot how nice it is to go fishing in a sno bear where you don’t have to get all dressed up to go out in the cold.  Because you can control the climate inside my wife decided to come with tonight.  It was 3:15 when we left for the lake on the madden voyage of the year, the first spot we had marked 3 fish but no takers.  So we moved to another spot that I have never been in the winter time and at 4:30 we drilled those holes and by 5:15 we where done with these 10 great table fare walleyes and had but back two smaller ones.  So we ended up back by 5:30 and had supper in the oven.

Devils Lake strikes again….

Posted: December 30, 2011

Devils lake strikes again.  We had a great time fishing on some new water these past couple of days.  We had good perch action kept 10 walleyes and 2 limits of 5-7 pound pike.  We did get 3 inches of snow these past couple of days making it look like winter.  This year more than any other year I recommend that you hire a guide or ask lots of questions before going out we still have only 11-13 inches of ice.  We are driving out with trucks in some areas and atvs on the others.  With the warm winter so far the fish are all spread out still, but best of all they are biting good this year.

Fishing remains good!

Posted: December 28, 2011

Fishing remains good! Walleyes are the most consistent and the perch are to follow. Each day the bite changes, some days tip-ups and some days jigging. The perch seem to move a lot but we hook up with them every few days. As you can see these customers from NE limited on walleyes and ended up with a dozen nice perch.

Ice Fishermen: Please be advised that Devils Lake currently has some spots on the main lake that is open water. The ice isn’t think enough to drive on. If you are going to fish, please do so with extreme caution.

“The Good Old Days on Devils Lake are happening right now!”

Posted: December 26, 2011

We hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas.  It hardly seemed like Christmas with no snow but it was a nice break for all of us to spend some time with our families.  This past week the Perch Patrol has been continuing to enjoy some of the best walleye fishing we have ever had this time of year.  We have been fortunate enough to bring in our limits everyday but the impressive part is the average size of them.  The northern pike fishing has been nothing short of spectacular at times as well.

Our best success has been jigging Northland Buckshot Rattlespoons, Lindy Rattlin Flyer Spoons, and the Rapala Jigging Shad Rap.  All of course tipped with a minnow head.  We have been finding most of our better fishing in anywhere from 7 to 9 feet of water.

As much fun as it is to enjoy the “no snow” conditions we do need some cold weather.  Our ice conditions have not been changing much.  Currently we still are sitting at anywhere from 11 to 13 inches on the west part of the lake and 9 to 10 inches on the main lake and all parts east of it.  We have heard some reports of open water by the bridges, in front of the Pepsi Barn on the north end of 6 mile bay, and along highway 20 on the west side of Black Tiger Bay.  Why the latter of the two spots remain open is a mystery.  We do still have some waterfall in the area and perhaps they are the culprets keeping this water open.  Be careful out there and make sure you know the ice thickness you are travelling on!

We have very busy answering the Perch Patrol Hotline and the fishermen are scheduling trips.  We have a staff of 6 guides this year and it takes a lot to fill us.  We do have some sold out dates but we have a lot that are not and we would love to get your group scheduled into some of these as soon as possible.  The conditions are setting up to be the best for getting around the lake that we have seen in years and this could go down as one of the best ice fishing seasons Devils Lake has had in twenty years!  I am going to leave you with a quote from our former ND Game and Fish Director the late Dean Hildebrand…”The Good Old Days on Devils Lake are happening right now!”

Happy Holidays Everybody!

Seems like any bait that you put down will have a chance!

Posted: December 25, 2011

Merry Christmas to all!! It feels more like a nice Halloween Day than Christmas Day, but I guess we will take it!!

As far as the bite goes…With no snow anywhere on the lake mobility is pretty simple and fish are being caught. I still feel like ATV’s are the way to go right now on Devils Lake. Ice conditions are anywhere from 8-15 inches (there could be areas that are less, but this is the thickness of the areas we are fishing.) Walleyes are smacking in the morning and evening, seems like any bait that you put down will have a chance, but I prefer a buckshot with a minnow head. Thump it up and down three or four times and lift it about a foot off of the bottom and get ready. Most of the eyes are eaters with some nicer ones mixed in as well. Perch have been day to day, but we have been catching some toads! If you are willing to move around a bit and stay with the school, seems like you can scratch a limit or close to a limit many of the days. Pike have been biting mixed in with the perch and when we target them, we are usually fishing in that 6-12 feet of water. Walleyes have been best in the 12-16 ft. range and the perch have been anywhere from 10-30 feet. Good luck to all and enjoy the beautiful weather and excellent fishing!!

Perch are being found during….

Posted: December 22, 2011

The walleyes are really on fire.  15-20 foot of water jigging minnow heads with Northland buck shot rattle spoons all colors thru out the day.  Perch are being found during the mid day bite a long with some very nice northerns.  We have been out the past 17 of 20 days the weather has been great it feels like March.

We have some time open coming up after Christmas if anyone wants to go harvesting fishing instead of just fishing.  Give our guide service a try we will take care of you.  Our ice condition are very good this year with no snow we are able to travel all over the lake.  I will be out for some time with family this year and I will be back soon to bring you the most up to date info.

Walleye action is the most consistent this week…

Well fishing remains very good. Walleye action is the most consistent this week. The perch seem to show up every couple days when you get on them they bite so that’s a good thing. As you can see my WI. Customers took advantage of my Dec. Special and are very happy with there catch. We still have some openings this winter. Happy holidays to you all.

Best bite is early and late for eyes and the perch have been good all day.

Posted: December 19, 2011

The bite has been good at Devils Lake!

Seems the best action is in that 10-12 ft of water for walleyes and perch. We have been fishing East Bay (from Black Tiger to East Devils Lake) and it seems like everywhere we are going we are finding fish. Some of the perch are huge and most of the walleyes are in that 13-16 inch range. We have had some big eyes as well with one of them reaching 30 inches. Best bite is early and late for eyes and the perch have been good all day. Not everyday has been hot for perch but there have been many good days for them. We have fished out as deep as 25 ft with some good success for eyes and perch as well. As far as the pike fishing goes we have had some mixed in with the eyes an perch. We have also went in shallower for them with some luck. We have found some clearer water and had some success sight fishing pike. There are still some areas that need to be fished and if we can get clear water it should be game on for sight fishing pike!

As far as the ice goes it is pretty good. Most areas are 8-12 inches thick. There are some places that we have not been to that I would say might have questionable ice. There were geese keeping some water open about a week ago so I WOULD NOT venture on that ice just yet (the area is east of Coxes flat on East Devils Lake.)

As far as presentation goes I’m not sure if it really matters. I think it is hard to beat a buckshot with a minnow head for eyes and the perch have been smacking them as well. Seems like you pound it off the bottom 4-5 times and bring it up a foot or two and they come up and hammer it. Fish with whatever lure you have the most confidence in! Some days more subtle is good and other days it is all about being aggressive, of late, aggressive is the key!

Good luck to all and have a Merry Christmas!!

Shaping up to be one of the best early ice seasons on Devils Lake!

Posted: December 18, 2011

What a great week of fishing!  This is easily shaping up to be one of the best early ice seasons on Devils Lake in the past five years.  There is ZERO snow.  Did you catch that?  Let me say that again…ZERO Snow!!! Anglers are able to go anywhere they want to fish right now and the way the walleye fishing has been this past week it’s hardly even fair!  Both for numbers and size, the walleye fishing has been incredible.  We have also been catching a lot of nice northern pike and a few perch, but I have to admit we have not spent any time pursuing the perch yet. In the areas that we normally fish perch, the ice thickness has been quite a bit behind the areas that we are fishing walleyes and northerns, but it is catching up rather quickly.

The ice conditions on the main lake, including Creel Bay, the Towers, and East Bay are nearing the 8 inch mark.  The ice on all parts west of the main lake are anywhere from 11 to 13 inches.  We are still using ATV’s and are ferrying our guests out in trailers.  Makes for quite the adventure.  Christmas carols are encouraged!

Our schedule really picks up after Christmas and yes, we are guiding through the New Years Holiday.  If you want to experience some of this incredible fishing, we strongly encourage you to organize your group and make that reservation as soon as possible as things are filling in quite rapidly.  As long as we have no snow, we do have glare ice and it is VERY slippery.  We strongly encourage you and everyone in your fishing party to bring ice cleats.

Have a great week and be safe out there!  We hope to see you very soon!
