Ice is steady at about 14” in the areas we are fishing.

Posted: December 30, 2010

The calm before the storm! Fishing in our houses has been pretty good the past few days. Our new track machines have been a great weapon against the snow. These give us free range of the lake allowing us to venture out miles past Creel Bay. Ice is steady at about 14” in our areas we are fishing. We are plowing about 6 miles of trails on Creel Bay. Beyond the trails driving is difficult for 4 wheel drive vehicles. Plan on tracked ATV’s or snowmobiles if you are on your own and want to scout for fish. We are seeing some deep water and slush in certain areas. Please do not drill holes on plowed trails.

Pike fishing has been good and our spear houses are producing some nice pike. Walleye fishing for some has been really good. Perch are spotty, but recently some of our fish houses have gotten some real nice jumbos.

Big storm for the next few days may make fishing tough. We will do our best to keep trails open. Happy New Year!!

The Walleyes have been biting good this winter on the west end.

Posted: December 25, 2010

Well the Walleyes have been biting good this winter on the west end. we have 14 to 17 inches of ice with 3 ft. of snow. Fun! We have ordered 2 sets of tracts for our trucks so we can go any place we want without the snow being a factor. Chris should have his set by the 1st of the year and I should have mine by Jan. 10th. Kyle will be using my Polaris Ranger with tracks that seats 4 people with no problem. If you would like to see the tracks we are running go to www.americantrucktrack.com and check them out. We will be unstoppable now. We still have a few openings this winter so don’t wait to book. 4 nights lodging, 3 days fully guided for $415.00 per/person

Keep your lines tight and Merry Christmas and happy New Year

Woodland has our plow trucks on the ice. Creel Bay has 14″ on the areas we are plowing. Getting more snow today, but we will do our best to keep up with it. Finding slush at cracks and pressure ridges. Some water around our houses also. We should have most of our houses out by Christmas. Kyle

Decent walleyes in depths from 6′ to 22′ of water!

Posted: December 19, 2010

Hello all, ice fishing season is still getting under way but with a damper in things. We recieved 17 inches of snow couple days ago which makes getting around on the lake kinda hard.  Right now the snow is soft so IF you do drive, and you have another pickup with you, you should be a ble to get around. The ice I dont think is totally safe with ice from 10-16 inches. Sleds or anything with tracks will work great. As to fishing, people  have  been pickup up decent walleyes in depths from 6 FOW to 22 FOW. Better areas have been Doc Hagens, Mission Bay on the humps, Rocky Point, North end of six mile, Walfords bay, Ft Totten area. Find structure and you will find fish. Buck shot rattle spoons, Frostee’s and the NEW Live forage jigging baits from northland have been working the best tipped with a minnow head OR full minnow minus the head. Pike fishing remains good north end of walfords and north end of six mile bay. Perch have been slow but some being caught in front of the counrty club, dome house and south end of black tiger bay. Wax worms and spikes using smaller colorful jigs in 25-45 FOW have been working. Be safe and good luck to all!

We have as much as 12 to 14 inches on the bays and 8 to 10 on the main lakes.

Posted: December 16, 2010

Well, things looked a lot rosier before yesterday happened.  We had been pretty lucky dodging all these heavy snowfalls that kept going south of us and then boom…our turn.  We got 12 to 15 inches dumped on us all day yesterday.  We are pretty lucky in the fact that by avoiding the heavy snow for so long, the lake was making pretty good ice.  So far we have as much as 12 to 14 inches on the bays and 8 to 10 on the main lakes.  But now that ice building will be a little slower as this heavy snowfall will definitely be an insulator.

What does all this mean???  It means travel on Devils Lake is going to be a lot more difficult.  We have been dealing with this same problem, the past 3 seasons.  Because of this, both Woodland Resort and the Perch Patrol are more equipped to handle these situations than ever before in either of our ice fishing histories.  We have spent a lot of money investing in Mattracks for ATV’s and vehicles and Hugglund SUSVs.  All of this, to better equip ourselves to get our customers where they need to be to catch fish.  So, turn that frown upside down!!!  Our fishing spots just got a little more private as of yesterday.

We have been very busy taking reservations and gearing up for what looks to be an extremely busy winter.  We still have plenty of room to take your party fishing and we would love to take you fishing this winter.  Most of the the Woodland rental houses are now on the lake and some of them have have been producing some nice catches of perch, walleyes, and northern pike.  The first customers for the Perch Patrol arrive on December 27th.  The Perch Patrol have been busy putting their new Fish Trap Thermos together and getting geared up for another busy winter.

Walleye’s are biting really good in the early A.M. and late P.M.

Posted: December 9, 2010

Hey guys hope you guys had a good fall. Well we have 10 to 13 inches of ice on the west end of the lake and about 10 inches of snow. Walleye’s are biting really good in the early A.M. and late P.M. Most the fish are coming in 6 to 10 ft. of water. Jigging spoons like the Lindy Flyer’s are working well tipped with minnow heads. Tip-Ups with a #10 treble hook tipped with a minnow is working well also.
We do have some openings yet this winter if your interested, and a great Dec. special if you can make.

Keep your lines tight.

ice conditions over the past week and a half have improved quite a bit.

ICE FISHING ICE FISHING ICE FISHING!!!!!

Well its finally here, ice conditions over the past week and a half have improved quite a bit. We went from 3 inches on small bays and open water to 7-10 inches of ice on small bays and 4-6 on the bigger stuff. People are starting to venture out on foot mostly and some are using ATV’s and Snow Machines……Reports of some walleye action in mission bay jigging the humps, north end of six mile bay, lake irvin is producing some, north end of creel, and Walfords bay. Anglers are fishing 9-17 FOW on humps, weed beds and shallower points. Pike action has been good on lake irvin, north end of six mile bay and north end of Walfords bay. For the perch i havnt heard much of anything yet, once there are more people out fishing the reports will start to come in……but if you wanna try some spots try around the casino, towers area, in front of the country club or mouth of creel bay. Once i hear some reports on perch i will post them as soon as i get them in. Good luck and good fishing, saftey first, drill more holes as your going out to check the ice.

It’s cold and we are building more ice.

Posted: December 6, 2010

It’s cold and we are building more ice.  Anglers reporting 4 to 7 inches of good strong ice. Just a few brave folks have ventured out.  Some limited reports so far. We will be taking out our spear houses tomorrow, first guests on Friday. More reports to follow. Our crews are working hard to get our new track machines ready and Glen has the store stocked to the ceiling with the newest tackle.  Looking forward to hearing the augers running!

Still have some excellent dates open.  Hope to see you on the ice!

We are anticipating another great season of ice fishing again on Devils Lake!

Posted: December 3, 2010

DEVILS LAKE HAS ICE! Another ice fishing season is officially underway. The smaller bays like 6 mile bay, Wolfords Bay and Mission bay have reports of 3-5 inches of ice. The main lake itself has 1-3 inches. With below average temps and little snow cover on the lake we are making ice fast.
Some anglers have started to venture out but please use caution on early ice as ice conditions vary from place to place. If you do go out, please fish with a partner and bring ice picks and a rope just in case. Its a long season and we don’t want to see anyone get in trouble out there.
The perch fishing last season was the best we have had in years and looks to be even better this season. Devils Lake has also been listed as one of the top 5 best walleye fisheries in the country, add in a healthy population of hungry Northern pike and you have one of the best ice fishing destinations in the country.
This season we will again be using the Clam Thermal X fish houses as these are by far the best fish houses we have ever used and our clients had nothing but great things to say about them. This season we will be using the Vexilar FL-18s and new this year are the Vexilar Fl-22s. We are really excited to use these new units.
We have started to take reservations for the upcoming season and if you have a large group we urge you to call soon as some dates are already filling in. If you want a good look at Devils Lake Jumbo Perch fishing, check us out on, “Jason Mitchell Outdoors.” on Fox FSN north TV this weekend.
