Water temps are increasing and the start of new plant growth in shallow bays means things are only going to get better.

Posted: May 28, 2010

Anglers this past week have reported some excellent fishing for walleyes, pike, and white bass. Water temps are increasing and the start of new plant growth in shallow bays means things are only going to get better.

Anglers are reporting the best fishing pitching cranks, mimic minnows, or other jigs with plastics into the edges of cattails or windswept rocky shorelines in shallow bays; jigging the bridges or other moving water areas, or slip bobbering in the trees. For cranks, try using shad raps, countdowns, x-raps, wally divers, or other shallow running cranks.

Some of the better areas for walleyes and pike have been most all newly flooded areas around the lake, the bays of Pelican and the Flats, New Mil and Old Mil bays, the Doc Hagens area, Holy Bay, Knudson’s, Mission Bay, the ditch along Camp Grafton, Penny & New Penny Bay, the Storm Sewer area, Ruttens Bay and Combine Bay in Black Tiger, and Browns Bay in East Devils Lake. In these areas, anglers are reporting the fish appear to be in small scattered pockets. Keep moving around until you catch some fish, work that school, and then move on looking for the next one when things slow down.

Anglers are also reporting some really hot white bass action in most all areas of the lake. Most all cranks are working on whites with blue being the best color. Also, jigs tipped with minnows can really be hot on whites.

Good Luck, Good Fishing, have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend, and don’t forget to say a prayer for our military service men!!!

The fishing has been fantastic this past week.

The fishing has been fantastic this past week.  Nice limits of walleyes and northern pike have been taken and there are even some pretty good reports of white bass biting as well.   The weather has been a bit of a roller coaster infact yesterday and today and we have had to cancel all of our groups due to either thunderstorms or high winds.   So the water temperature has heated up and so has the fishing.  We are still catching most of our fish pitching crank baits and mimic minnow in the shallow backwater bays and we have had some success slip bobbering the shallow water as well.

The schedule for Mitchell’s Guide Service is now in full swing.  Our staff of guides is going to be very busy from here on out so look forward to more timely fishing reports and more photos as well.  Now is the perfect time to take that first fishing trip of the season and enjoy one of the best shallow water walleye bites on the planet.  We would love to take you and your group fishing real soon!

Good Luck Fishing Everybody!

Fish are biting!!!

Posted: May 24, 2010

Fish are biting!!! Now is the time to get out on Devils Lake and experience the shallow water bite! Find cattails and rocks with the warmest water and get ready. Seems like the bite is best during the mid-day hours, after the sun has had some time to heat up the water a few degrees. Also, the night bite has been fantastic. The best time to fish is probably towards the late evening and even after dark. It is important to mix retrieves and use pauses and jerks to entice bites. You will have many fish hit right at the boat. The best baits include: jigs and plastics, shadraps, countdowns and live bait rigs like lindy-rigs tipped with a leech or minnow and slip-bobbers tipped with the same. Remember catch and release on the bigger fish. It is common to catch walleyes between 20 and 25 inches and bigger this time of year; remember, they are our future and to put them back! Good Luck and keep your lines tight!!

Boat fisherman are finding excellent fishing in most parts of the lake for pike, walleyes, and white bass

Posted: May 21, 2010

Finally some nice weather’s warmed up the water temps and fishing along with it. Boat fisherman are finding excellent fishing in most parts of the lake for pike, walleyes, and white bass. In these areas anglers are pitching cranks such as shad raps or countdowns or jigs with plastic into shallow windswept shorelines and along the edges of developing weedbeds. Find warmer water temps and you’ll find fish. Anglers are also reporting some jig fishing in the early morning and evening hours in the moving water bridge areas. With new record high lake levels, anglers are finding a lot of newly flooded areas around the lake and are reporting most of these areas to hold fish. Some of the better areas have been the small bays in Pelican and the Flats, Doc Hagens, New Mill Bay, Knudson’s Bay, Mission Bay, Penny Bay, the storm sewer area, Black Tiger Bay, Browns Bay in East Devils Lake, and most of the bridge or other moving water areas. Shore fisherman are reporting some good fishing at the bridges in the early morning and even hours and along the rip rap roads on the western part of the lake near Minnewaukan. For walleyes try jigs or lindy rigs tipped with leeches or minnows. For pike, spoons, cranks, smelt, or herring. For white bass, white or chartreuse jigs tipped with minnows. Good Luck & Good Fishing!!!

Rising water seems to help anglers on Devils Lake

Posted: May 19, 2010

Fishing is picking up after a dip in temperatures the past couple weeks. Anglers are catching fish. The rising water isn’t causing too many problems with boat ramps like one might think.

The wind, however, is forcing people to use different ramps. While the town worries about flooding, the high water seems to help anglers.

“It’s actually pretty good for the fishing. It floods a lot of areas, new vegetation. A lot of new weed beds for the fish to hang out in.”

Fishing season is always open in North Dakota.

Fishing the past couple of days has steadily improved

Posted: May 18, 2010

Fishing the past couple of days has steadily improved. Mid 70 degree temperatures and plenty of sunshine has brought the water temperatures from 46 degrees to anywhere from 50 to 54 degree temperatures. We have been spending most of our time in the shallow water back bays both pitching crank baits and mimic minnows and slip bobbering as well. This shallow water bite provides some of the funnest methods of fishing of the year. Not only is it fun exploring all the new water we seem to get as a result of the flooding but there is nothing like feeling that explosion of a northern pike or a big walleye hitting your crank bait as it is reeled in. We highly recommend that you bring along a pair of polarized sunglasses so you can see all the fish that follow your crank bait right up to the boat. For those of you who love to cast, It doesn’t get any better than this, and the best fishing is just beginning.
