Anglers have been reporting some hit and miss fishing.

Posted: March 19, 2010

Anglers have been reporting some hit and miss fishing this past week on both perch and walleyes. As usual, the walleye bite has been best during early morning and evening hours with only spotted activity during the day. Some of the better areas have been Pelican Lake, the sunken points in the Flats, Six Mile Bay, both the north end and Doc Hagens areas, Rocky/Military Point, the Casino area, Mission Bay, the Mauvee Coulee, East Bay near the camp entrance, Foughty’s Point, the sunken Black Tiger road, and East Devils Lake.

Sonars, chubby darters, nils, raps, and spoons such as buckshots, forage minnows, and kastmasters tipped with minnows or minnow heads have been working well. Best bites have been in shallower rocks and trees. Perch fishing while good one day, can be next to nothing the next. Some of the areas producing fish continue to be Jerusalem in East Devils Lake, the Woods Rutten area, the Casino area, and Six Mile Bay. Small raps, hali’s, and kastmasters with dropper lines tipped with wax worms or minnow heads have all been working. Pike fishing has picked up in the north end of Six Mile, Sweetwater/Morrison area, Lake Irvin, and Pelican Lake. Smelt or herring with tip-ups works well.

As for ice conditions, most anglers are finding last week’s warmer temps to have weakened shorelines and made driving a bit more difficult, but still available in most areas. However, we would recommend anglers start using atv’s as things will only get worse as temps increase. Bridges now have open water and the water is moving in coulee areas, so extreme caution is adviced in those parts of the lake. Good Luck & Good Fishing!!!

Fishing this past week has been challenging.

Posted: March 18, 2010

Fishing this past week has been challenging. Recent snow has made fishing very difficult and getting around the lake is nearly impossible without plows, tracks, or snowmobiles. It took all of Monday and part of Tuesday, but we have been able to replow our roads in Creel bay and parts of the big lake. Fishing remains slow. This has a lot to do with recent weather, and the loss of mobility.

We are getting reports of good walleye fishing in some of the upper lakes and some decent perch fishing in East Bay. Things can change in a hurry; so don’t give up on Devils Lake yet!

Fishing reports continue to be scattered. Some do well while others tend to struggle.

WOW… What a difference a week can make. Last week heavy snow made travel on the lake by vehicles almost impossible. This week warm temps have turned the heavy snow pack into slush. Anglers are now reporting being able to drive on the lake, but some areas now have a lot of water and slush pockets can seem kind of scary even though the ice underneath is still in good shape. With the wet slush and water on the ice, anglers should bring along a good pair of rubber boots if they want to keep dry. As for fishing, reports continue to be scattered. Each day some do well while others tend to struggle. Those moving around and working less pressured areas have been doing fairly well on walleyes and also catching some perch. Some of the better walleye areas have been Pelican Lake, the humps and points in the Flats, Doc Hagens, the Ft. Totten/Cactus Point area, the Casino area, East Bay near Stromme’s and out from the Camp entrance, the sunken Black Tiger road, and East Devils Lake. Buckshots, forage minnows, raps, nils, and kastmasters tipped with minnows or minnow heads have been working well in the morning and evening hours. Perch fishing remains spotty with some fish being caught in East Devils Lake, the Woods Rutten area, and the Casino area. Try using hali’s, fat boys, genz worms, raps, and kastmasters tipped with wax worms or minnow heads. Pike fishing remains good in the north end of Six Mile, Sweetwater/Morrison area, Lake Irvin, and Pelican Lake. Smelt or herring with tip-ups works well. Good Luck & Good Fishing!!!

Vehicle mobility off trails next to impossible in most areas of the lake.

Posted: March 1, 2010

Mother nature continues to make things difficult for ice fisherman on Devils Lake. The heavy snow pack now on the ice is making vehicle mobility off trails next to impossible in most areas of the lake. Anglers wishing to venture to their favorite spots are largely limited to snowmobiles or vehicles with tracks. Even with these, anglers are finding some heavy slush areas that make fishing and mobility quite difficult. As for trails, there is a trail out of Ackerman Acres to Foughtys and the Dairy, the Casino to the bridge and point, and in Creel Bay out of Woodland Resort to the Rocky/Military Point areas. On the other hand, those with the ability to venture about are reporting some excellent walleye fishing in the morning and evening hours. Places producing fish include rocky humps and points in Pelican, the Flats, Doc Hagens, the Ft. Totten area, Rocky/Military Points, the Casino area, storm sewer, East Bay near the Camp entrance, the sunken road in Black Tiger, and East Devils Lake.

Try fishing these rocky areas in 12-25 feet of water with sonars, or jigs such as buckshots, kastmasters, raps, nils and forage minnow tipped with minnows or minnow heads. Perch fishing remains tough with a few fish being caught in the deeper water in the Rocky/Military Point area, the Casino, the Woods Rutten area, and East Devils Lake. Pike fishing remains good in the north end of Six Mile, Sweetwater/Morrison area, and Pelican Lake. Smelt or herring with tip-ups works well. Good Luck & Good Fishing!!!
